In short: If their profile is gone for you but visible to a friend, you have most likely been blocked. If it is gone for everyone, they deactivated. If the profile looks normal but messages never deliver and you never see a green dot or a “Seen”, that is Messenger’s Restrict. Answer the questions below and I will narrow it down.
Nobody can tell you for certain. Facebook never notifies anyone that they have been blocked and never confirms it — by design. There is no list of people who blocked you, and any site or app claiming to show you one is guessing or worse. What follows is the most likely explanation, not proof.
Blocked, restricted, deactivated: the difference
| What you see | Blocked | Restricted | Deactivated |
|---|---|---|---|
| Their profile in search | Gone for you, fine for others | Completely normal | Gone for everyone |
| Their name in old chats | Real name, not clickable | Normal | Shows “Facebook User” |
| New messages | Cannot send | Send, never deliver | Stick on “Sent” |
| Their Active status | Never | Never (both ways) | Never |
| Were they told? | No | No | N/A |
The one check that settles blocked vs deactivated
From your own account these two look identical — the profile is simply not there. The difference is whether it exists for anyone else. Open Facebook in a logged-out browser window and search the name, or ask one mutual friend to look. If they find it, you were blocked. If they cannot, the account is gone.
Deactivation is far more common than people assume, and it is usually nothing to do with any one person. It is also reversible — the profile and the name reappear the moment they log back in.
What Restrict actually does
Restrict is Messenger’s quiet mute, and the modern replacement for Ignore. Their messages still arrive, silently, in Message Requests — no notification. You never get a “Seen”, even after they read it. Neither of you sees the other’s Active status. Calls never ring their phone. And nobody is told, on either side.
Because it is Messenger-only, a restricted person’s Facebook profile looks completely normal — they can still see your posts and comments. That combination, normal profile plus undelivered messages plus no green dot, is the giveaway.
Full breakdown: restricted vs blocked on Messenger.
Can you see who blocked you?
No — there is no such list, and there never has been. You can see everyone you have blocked in your own settings, but Facebook gives you nothing in the other direction. Treat any tool promising otherwise as a scam after your login.
