In short: On Messenger, an outline circle with a tick means sent, a filled circle means delivered to their phone, and their tiny profile photo means read. Facebook Dating is different — it has no read receipts at all, so a match can read your message and you will never know. Use the checker below to decode exactly what you are looking at.
What each Messenger icon means
- Empty circle, or a clock — still sending. It has not left your phone yet, so this is your connection, not them.
- Outline circle with a tick — sent. It reached Facebook’s servers but not the other person’s device.
- Filled circle with a tick — delivered. It is on their phone. This does not mean they have read it.
- Their tiny profile photo — read. They opened the conversation and your message was on screen.
- Red exclamation mark — the send failed. Tap it to retry.
Why Facebook Dating never shows “Seen”
Facebook Dating has no ticks, no checkmarks and no “Seen” label — and no setting that turns them on. If you are picturing grey and blue ticks, that is WhatsApp and Messenger. Meta built Dating chats to feel lower-pressure than Messenger, so nobody feels watched while they decide what to say.
Which means silence in Dating tells you nothing at all. The usual explanations: they have not opened the Dating tab in days, they paused their profile, they left Dating, or they simply have not replied yet. One exception worth knowing — if they unmatched you, the conversation disappears from your list entirely. So if you can still see the thread, that is not what happened.
Full detail: Facebook Dating message not read — what it really means.
Stuck on “Sent” and never delivering?
The message reached Facebook but not their device. Ranked from most to least innocent: their phone is off or offline; they have not opened Messenger; they restricted you; they deactivated the account; they blocked you.
The quickest way to narrow it down is to check whether it happens with everyone or only that one person. If everyone, it is your app or your connection. If only them, work through the blocked or restricted checker.
Can you turn read receipts off?
Not in Messenger. There is no setting to hide yours, and no way to un-send a read receipt once the chat is open — opening the conversation from a notification is enough to trigger it. Facebook Dating is the opposite: receipts do not exist there in the first place, for anyone.
